Abstract Elemental analyses and chemical degradation techniques were applied to characterize lignin compounds in different stages of the chlorine bleaching process and in total mill effluent. Ultrafiltration was used for separation of chlorolignins into three nominal molecular weight fractions. Alkaline CuO oxidation products were analyzed by HPLC with diode array detection. Major compounds were identified by reference to authentic compounds. For comparison, native lignins (MWL), kraft lignins, and humic substances were studied as well. Model compound synthesis for the structure determination of new unknown planar aromatic compounds originating from pulp mill

Abstract Several model compounds have been synthesized for verification of the structures of new unknown planar aromatic compounds (UPACs) observed in high-resolution gas chromatography/low-resolution mass spectrometry analyses of the polychlorodibenzodioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorodibenzofurans (PCDFs) in pulp mill products, effluents, sediments and mussels. The mass spectra of synthetic alkyl polychlorodibenzofurans (C6-PCDFs) were different, but those of alkyl polychlorobibenzyls (C5-PCBBs) were very similar compared to the spectra of UPACs.

Several new 3-(isoxazol-3-yl)-quinazolin-4(3H)-one derivatives were synthesized and tested for their analgesic and antiinflammatory activities, as well as for their acute toxicity and ulcerogenic effect. A few compounds were as active as phenylbutazone in the writhing and acetic acid peritonitis tests. They had a very low ulcerogenic effect.

Summary: In a soil application, Torilis arvensis was nearly as susceptible as Lolium rigidum to simazine but was 18-fold more tolerant to diuron. Treat ment with diuron inhibited photosynthesis in L. rigidum but had only a limited effect in T. arvensis although chloroplasts isolated from both species displayed similar susceptibility. 14C-diuron degradation in plants was limited, with the formation of conjugates of mono-methyl-diuron in T. arvensis and N-dealkylated derivatives of diuron in L. rigidum. 14C-diuron entered the roots and was translocated throughout the leaves of L. rigidum but was restricted to stems, leaf petioles and leaf veins of T. arvensis. Exposure of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) to a high sublethal concentration of 0.335 ppm (0.50 of the 96-hr LC50) of lindane for 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr affected carbohydrate metabolism. Muscle glycogen levels decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) at 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr; liver glycogen content did not decline at any time. Muscle glucose levels in fish were elevated at 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr but in liver, the levels increased only at 96 hr. Mean values of muscle and liver pyruvate were elevated significantly (P less than 0.05) at 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hr. Muscle lactate levels increased at 6, 12, 24, and 48 hr in pesticide-treated fish.
